To the Ladies

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

To the Ladies
by Lady Mary Chudleigh

Wife and servant are the same,
But only differ in the name :
For when that fatal knot is tied,
Which nothing, nothing can divide :
When she the word obey has said,
And man by law supreme has made,
Then all that's kind is laid aside,
And nothing left but state and pride :
Fierce as an eastern prince he grows,
And all his innate rigour shows :
Then but to look, to laugh, or speak,
Will the nuptial contract break.
Like mutes, she signs alone must make,
And never any freedom take :
But still be govern'd by a nod,
And fear her husband as a God :
Him still must serve, him still obey,
And nothing act, and nothing say,
But what her haughty lord thinks fit,
Who with the power, has all the wit.
Then shun, oh ! shun that wretched state,
And all the fawning flatterers hate :
Value yourselves, and men despise :
You must be proud, if you'll be wise.

Notes:
The word obey
The traditional marriage service called for the wife to "love, honour, and obey" her husband; the husband promised to "love, honour, and  cherish" his wife.

Money: He Hit the Jackpot

My friend was not a deadbeat. He was not the kind of person who never paid the money he owed.
這表示
deadbeat= a person who never paid the money he owed

Money: He Hit the Jackpot

hand over fist
informal
if you gain or lose something hand over fist, you gain or lose it very quickly:
Five years ago, the company was losing money hand over fist.

born with a silver spoon in one's mouth= to have a rich family

be hard up for something= to lack something; own few and far from enough

deadbeat = the kind of person who never paid the money he owed.

pinch pennies = very careful with the money spent

burning a hole in one's pocket = to spend money very quickly

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
3.to stop doing something because there are too many problems and it is impossible to continue

Just Vocabulary
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

GRE word list,

VOA:Special English 的 Wordmaster

Wordmaster: A Weekly Analysis of American English

(If you paraphrase someone or paraphrase something that they have said or written, you express what they have said or written in a different way.)

Money: He Hit the Jackpot
Words & Their Stories

He did not have a rich family.
He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

He was not the kind of person who never paid the money he owed.
He simply pinched pennies.
He was always very careful with the money he spent.
